SAN ANTONIO, July 9 (Our Texas Times) — Toyota Motor North America, a unit of Toyota Motor Corp. (NYSE: TM), said it will invest $3.6 billion to expand its San Antonio manufacturing campus, add a second assembly line and move Tacoma production from Baja California to Texas over about four years. The company said the project is expected to create 2,000 jobs.
Toyota said the expansion will add 2.5 million square feet to the South Side site and eventually allow the campus to build Tacoma pickups alongside the Tundra, Sequoia and rear axles. The company said the expanded plant is targeted to open in 2030.
On its Texas facility page, Toyota said the campus already includes one vehicle assembly line and a rear axle plant that is nearing startup. The company said rear axle production is scheduled to begin in fall 2026.
Texas Gov. Greg Abbott, in a statement included with Toyota’s announcement, said the project shows that “Texas is where the world builds bigger,” adding that the expansion would double the factory footprint and create 2,000 new jobs. Toyota also thanked Bexar County and the city of San Antonio for their long support.
